The investments are motivated by the growth of e-commerce and increasing demand for paper-based alternatives to plastic packaging.
DS Smith Packaging plans to build two new corrugated packaging facilities in Italy and Poland in the coming two years. The total cost amounts to approximately £100m and will be financed through non-core asset disposal and cash flow, DS Smith explained.
“We are as excited as ever about the structural growth drivers for corrugated packaging with a number of trends accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic. We are well-positioned to capitalize and are announcing today the construction of two new states of the art packaging plants in the fast-growing regions of Italy and Poland to supply the burgeoning FMCG/ e-commerce sector,” said Miles Roberts, CEO of DS Smith group.
One facility will be located in Castelfranco Emilia, near Modena, in Italy’s northern province of Emilia Romagna. The second plant is to be built in Bełchatów, south of Łódź, Central Poland. According to DS Smith Packaging Poland, the new facility is expected to launch operations in the first quarter of 2022.
