Pulp prices under substantial downward pressure in China as demand drops

Following a drop of $60/tonne for radiata pine imports earlier this month in China, several Canadian suppliers have succumbed to similar pressure, cutting northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp’s list prices by $60/tonne in the Chinese market.

The erosion has brought net levels for the grade to $810-820/tonne.

Despite the reductions and an ensuing small pickup in purchases, sellers reported that they still have unsold allotments.

“Most buyers, including large mills, have reduced volumes or even skipped orders, saying they have sufficient stocks, and are still seeing large amounts of pulp arriving in China, swamping the market,”
