Powell River newsprint mill planned to be restarted

The Canadian Powell River mill, which produces newsprint and specialty packaging papers, has been down for months. Now, Paper Excellence is preparing for a restart in May.

Canadian pulp and paper manufacturer Paper Excellence is preparing the restart of its Powell River paper mill, which has been standing still for several months now. The company informed that is was planning to put one of the site’s two paper machines back into operation on or around 1 May. A total of 200 jobs will return with the startup of the machine. Paper Excellence hopes to be able to restart the mill’s second PM later in 2021.

The Powell River mill has a the capacity to produce 334,000 tpy of newsprint and packaging paper grades on two machines. The site has been down since spring last year. Due to a malware attack in February 2020, Paper Excellence had to curtail production at this and other mills. In addition, the pandemic with its negative effects on paper demand burdened the site. Now, global paper markets had recovered, the company said, allowing it to restart PM 11.
